Brunch is served from 12pm-12am

February BreakfastGranola

I have never been the fussy type--it shows through my choice of breakfast. When I see people stuff sausages, bacon strips, 5 eggs, and a gallon of juice down, I'm just thinking, "where does that all go?!" And so my little unspoken rule for morning meals goes like this: no more than four. When you have to rethink what ingredients went into your breakfast, that's when you know it's too much. Plus, when you're a college student like me, you need quick. Simple and satisfying. When you're up at 7am, you don't want to add additional thinking to the morning routine. Save that brain power for class kiddos. Need some suggestions?

How about..
- Slice of Pumpernickel (I stole some extra fresh bread from the good dining hall, mmm yummy) with butter, half of a grapefruit, fresh coffee (I like French Costa Rican or Dominican).
- Crispix cereal (or any cereal that doesn't turn your milk into sugar water), oat clusters with dried cranberries, milk. The granola turns a boring cereal into a semi-gourmet snack. Ya know, fancy shmancy.
- Maple & brown sugar oatmeal, Oceanspray cranberries, side of Greek yogurt (vanilla or mango), cup of Martinelli's apple juice
- Your favorite croissant with coconut jam (find this at an Asian supermarket), a perfectly ripe pear, coffee. Obviously. You need coffee with a pastry. Always.

On a side note, I've been reading Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma and Jonathan Safran Foer's Eating Animals. Even though I can't say I'm ready for vegetarianism, awareness is the first step in understanding the food industry.

By the way, is it just me this month who is constantly battling my craving for food vs. shopping for shoes? Oh, it never ends.

Let's Eat! (Aren't those your favorite words?)

image via simply breakfast
I decided I was ready to embark on this food blog expenditure right after I scarfed down my morning dark roast coffee. Very appropriate for this moment right? I was inspired by one of my friends to turn my past fashion blog into a food blog. I feel with fashion, there was too much competition to be "the best" fashion blog out there. That's not what I wanted. I need something personal, feel-good, a kind of warmth I feel from having that familiar taste of coffee at 8am. That's what writing about food gives to me. What else could be more personal than what I put in my body everyday? The type of nourishment that powers me to go through morning classes and dealing with people (Hard work, I know). Aside from my foodie needs, my Food Studies class has really got me thinking about the origins of food and the way I think about consumption---in terms of eating animals or unrealized rituals. I'm a sucker for food porn, but this blog is going to go further than that.. Sight, taste, AND mental stimulation. How about them apples?

Switcharoo: Gotta Do What I Gotta Do

2/9/12 Coffee Stash
2/9/12 Braid

And so we meet again.. Oh Blogger, why would I ever leave you? It's been Wordpress for not that long but those silly people wanted me to pay for creating my own template. Oh please, I gotchu Blogger. Why should I settle for less?

Upon starting my grown up duties at my new internship, I truly feel like a New Yorker. I mean comeon, I crave for $1 slices of pizza at Papaya Dog, have eargasms from street jazz performers, and now I work for free too! If that doesn't make me a good citizen, I don't know what does. If I'm going to make it here, I have to start somewhere. Fancy shmancy is just going to have to wait.

In terms of my professional photographer.. Yeah, currently self-employed. My mother is too far, and if she were here, I'd rather we go eat than make her take photographs of me. You can't blame a girl for thinking it feels too awkward to ask a random friend to take pictures of my outfit. Fashion is a weird thing; it's so public yet private. Anyways, she's still in training. A month ago, I taught her how to get to the right level to proportionate the body. I guess all that cam-whoring is paying off in super skills in photography.

One of the most important things I learned since coming back is buying a French Press and making my own coffee. If you're a caffeine addict like I am (loud and proud), consider finding a local coffee importing shop and buying some freshly roasted beans. I went to Porto Rico in West Village and they grind those beans to perfection. One whiff and it's like I'm breathing in the caffeine and rich coffee taste. French Costa Rican is my new favorite. Starbucks? Pleaseee...

Stay tuned for my next endeavor, as my internship should entail big adventures. For some reason, I keep hoping that I will receive gratis like Andy does in The Devil Wears Prada. You can't blame a girl for wanting free Marc Jacobs right?
